Wine palms (Jubaea chilensis) are native to Chile. They seem to cope quite well with the dry, Mediterranean climate typical of the area around Santiago. When cut down, they can be used to produce palm wine or a honey-like palm syrup. As a result, the species has already been classified as endangered and is now protected.
